Turns out the inspiration for 'Call Me Maybe' was her boyfriend!
Interview magazine got the scoop from Carly Rae, who explained, "It began as a folky acoustic number. I was at my uncle's house and then the bridge, you know, 'Before you came into my life I missed you so bad,' that's about this guy who I'm seeing, he makes up for all the things that I'm not. It's awesome! I missed him before he was even in my life."
Is Carly Rae still dating the same guy? Yes!
She explains, "I think he feels pretty special about it. I hope he does, at least! The way I write is generally about love. I have a great fascination about the subject."
Carly Rae also talks about Justin Bieber taking an interest in the song: "It began with a hysterical phone call from my sister, saying that he had tweeted. I don't know why he had chosen me out of everyone! That was beyond my wildest dreams."
Of Justin, Carly Rae says: "He is Justin Bieber! But he's just so relaxed and comfortable and chill about everything. He let me jump in on one of his songs and sing on it."
How cool is that?
She recently told MTV that the duet with Justin is "pretty stripped-down. It's pretty casual. It's not too dance-y; it's more intimate."
Check out Carly Rae in this Good Morning America video clip, where she talked about Justin's help with getting her song maximum exposure:
"It began with a simple tweet... then it snowballed... there was a picture or a video that he'd made. I was actually touring Canada with the band Hanson and I got a call from my manager just being like, 'Scooter [Braun] and Justin are serious about this.'"
The rest, they say, is history.
