How many jellybeans does it take to make a music video? In Kina Grannis' case 288,000.Kina stopped by Cambio to hang out and chat about herself and her famous jellybean video "In Your Arms". Kina told us how she started writing songs when she was really young, playing the piano, violin and guitar but it wasn't till high school when she realized that she had to play music for real not just for fun and that she was confident enough that she could make it in the music world. The video concept came about from her friend who had told her about giant portraits made out of jellybeans. She was intrigued and thought that it would be a fun way to make a music video. Kina told us that she didn't have any idea what she was getting herself into or how long it would take. In fact she thought the video would maybe take a month to make...not 22 months.
Kina does admit that it was lucky she had no idea of the length of time - as she may not have been so keen to do it. Kina takes us through how the video was made, that each frame could take about 20 minutes to an hour to set up and shoot and that the video was shot with her lying down on a plexi glass with jelly beans behind her. Although she was smiling through the process it was both physically and mentally exhausting. Lucky for Kina the video came out so good and was well worth the hard work. You can catch Kina on her North American tour this spring.
