The Wanted sat down with us while they were in Los Angeles recently for their sold-out show at the El Rey to talk about their musical influences, their fans, the success of heir single, Glad You Came and the band's self-described "pretty epic" sound.Siva, Max, Tom, Jay and Nathan's recent success in the U.S. could also be described as pretty epic. While they're one of the biggest pop acts in the U.K., the boy band was relatively unknown in the States before and appearing on The Ellen Degeneres Show just over a month ago and being signed by Justin Bieber's manager Scooter Braun. Since then, they've been selling out shows all over the country and their single, Glad You Came, has become a staple on Top 40 Radio.
According to the band, their musical influences include everything from Nirvana and Coldplay, to the Jackson 5 and Stevie Wonder. "Because we're a pop act, we can mix these genres without it being terrible," said Jay.
The band's newfound fame has come with some pretty crazy fan experiences. One fan recently asked for a lock of Jay's hair... and then ate it. Another fan hid in Siva's truck. "The word fan comes from the term fanatic, you so you expect fans to be a little bit crazy," he said.
"If you don't get the stereotypical, excitable fans, then you're a pretty awful band," said Nathan.
