Lady Gaga's "Swine" performance at SXSW caused a lot of controversy. The pop star had a "vomit artist" drink a big jug of green stuff, stick her finger down her throat and puke all over her while she sang the song, which was obviously more than a little bit offensive to a lot of people.Demi Lovato, for one, slammed the pukey performance during a Twitter rant, saying it glamorized eating disorders and was "not cool or artsy at all." And you know what, we tend to agree with her.
In fact, so do a lot of other people. Many former Gaga fans took to Twitter to slam the offensive on-stage antics and it became such an issue that the "vomit artist" herself decided to speak out in her own defense.
"I believe in absolute freedom of expression," she tweeted. "Challenging perceptions of art & beauty. If art is your communication it should not be censored."
She also spoke out in a new interview with Elle, where she ironically claimed that she does not promote eating disorders.
"My performance is not a statement about eating disorders in any way. I think the whole bulimia thing-It's important for people to know that I'm not trying to promote it," she said--which would be fine and everything, except that she also said that the vomiting "feels quite good in a way, because it's like you're cleaning your body out. It's kind of a cleanse."
Well, you may not be "promoting" it, but guess what...telling people that it feels "quite good" to purge like that isn't exactly discouraging the behavior, either.
For what it's worth, which is apparently a lot, Millie also told the mag that her vomit paintings sell for around $20,000.
Honestly, we just can't with this anymore...
