Gotye ripped on Glee's version of Somebody That I Used to Know, then almost as quickly, did damage control to prevent a full-on Gleek attack.Darren Criss and Matt Bomer's take on Somebody That I Used to Know was definitely a different spin, since the actors play brothers. Interesting, but nonetheless, a good cover of Gotye's song.
Gotye, however, didn't quite see it that way, telling the Sunday Mail: "They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals but the vocals were that pop Glee style, ultra-dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense, like it's playing to you from a cardboard box."
Gotye also remarked,"It sounded dinky and wrong."
Ouch.
True enough, not all Glee covers are true to the original, and in many cases, are so auto-tuned and tweaked that the singers don't sound much like themselves anymore.
To smooth things over with Gleeks, the singer attempted to take back some of what he said - though not entirely - saying to The Hollywood Reporter, "The nature of using reverb and space in a recording can change your perception of how a sound appeals to you... this xylophone hook in my song - it's kind of dinky not just in the cover version but the original song... [mockingly] that becomes the Glee cover I hated and Darren Criss is an a-hole."
Gotye added, "I thought it was really clever to transpose the song to two guys... It was a great idea."
Did Gotye make up for his previous slam?
