The Academy Awards is one of our favorite nights of television. We get our best girl friends together, order some pizzas, fill out our at home ballot boxes, and dish about which stars looked gorgeous and which should immediately fire their wardrobe stylists. Now that the 84th Annual Academy Awards have come and gone, we're recapping some of the highlights from the night.
Sacha Baron Cohen ruins Ryan Seacrest's outfit! One of the most surprising moments of the night happened before the Oscars even started. Ryan Seacrest was working the red carpet for E!'s pre-show and Sacha Baron Cohen, in character as The General, from his upcoming comedy The Dictator, made his way over to be interviewed. Now everybody knows Cohen always has something outrageous up his sleeve, so it was pretty evident that things wouldn't end well when Cohen told Ryan the urn he was holding contained "the ashes" of North Korea's Kim Jong-il. Next thing we knew, Ryan's snazzy tux was covered in white powder from the urn. Although his E! Co-stars loved the crazy prank, Seacrest looked pretty pissed by it all and was forced to change into a new tux jacket. Good thing he came prepared!
Emma Stone's sheer joy! Emma Stone and Ben Stiller were behind one of our favorite bits of the show. As a first-time presenter Emma couldn't hide her excitement much to the dismay of her seasoned co-presenter Ben Stiller who wanted her to tone it down. The Help star did her best to make her on-stage moment last, suggesting the pair exchange some witty banter or break into a musical number. Stone even tried to nudge Jonah Hill on stage for a dance. In one word, Emma was adorable.
Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis make some noise! The minute these two names were announced, we knew that something funny was ahead. Presenting the award for Best Original Song, the comedic duo emerged from the orchestra pit, dressed in all white tuxedos, banging cymbals as they headed to the stage. But not before stopping to show off their musical skills to Angelina and Brad Pitt. Of course, there was plenty of cymbal dropping and Zach even mispronounced his own name, but this kind of silly humor is what makes an award show fun.
Angelina Jolie's leg! While we expected to be talking about award show surprises most of the eve, all our conversation kept reverting back to Angelina Jolie's right leg. Wearing a dress by Atelier Versace with a thigh-high slit, Angie's right leg was on show all night long. And while it was one thing to strike an awkward pose on the red carpet, when the A-list actress did it again on-stage before presenting Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Screenplay, we just couldn't contain our amusement any longer. And apparently, neither could anyone else. Angie's leg scored its own Twitter account, @AngiesRightLeg, and it now has more than 12,000 followers. Not bad for less than 24 hours.
The winner's speech! From Ocativa Spencer to Meryl Streep to Best Actor Jean Dujardin, there is nothing like watching someone being told they were the best. It's always emotional, it's always powerful, and it always makes us smile. Like every time. My BFF's and I love hearing who the winner thanks - whether it's mom, the academy or even their hair stylist - and we bite our nails waiting to see if the winner remembers to thank their loved ones for all their support. Although we do enjoy all the elaborate clothes and jewelry, it's this genuine moment of happiness that makes every award show so memorable.
