To say I was offended was an understatement. Don't get me wrong. I don't work with a bunch of bigoted white supremacists or anything, but the fact that she thought a joke like that was funny just proves that North America still has a race issue.
Telling someone that a person has a fetish for some type of physical trait they have isn't a compliment. It's weird. It just means that they would only be interested in you because of the way you look. Not only that, but it also means that liking someone of a different race is somehow still seen as weird and different, and that's why it has to be a fetish.
No, he couldn't like me for who I am as a person, he would have to be "into black girls" in order for him to be interested like that. This is something I actually have to deal with more than one would think, and I'm sure it affects the self-esteem of other minority young women, too.
I'm not a fetish or a kink, I'm just me, and if you can't see past my skin color to get to know who I am, then I have no interest in you.
