We see a lot of random stuff on Facebook all day long. Now that people's food pictures have mostly moved over to Instagram, we mostly get news, viral videos, baby photos, selfies - those sorts of things.

When Melanie Williams uploaded her latest selfie to the social media site, however, it stood out from the bunch, and it ended up going viral for a very important reason.

In the pic above, Melanie is showing her thumb and it looks like she either has a fungus or maybe smashed her finger and there is bruising under the nail. And that's exactly why she shared it.

"See that on my thumb? Do you know what it is? Its skin cancer. This grew from nothing in a matter of weeks. I thought it was just a fungal infection or a wart. Sadly not," she wrote.

"I've been lucky, the cancer hasn't spread and it's being removed next week along with half of my thumb. This may have not been the case if I'd left it and not got it checked out," she continued.

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and is responsible for 9,000 skin cancer deaths in the U.S. each year.

In her post, Melanie went on to say that she didn't post it looking for sympathy, she simply wants to raise awareness - and that's exactly what she did. The post has already been shared over 115,000 times.
