Refinery29 reports that this lady Viagra-type drug, flibanserin, hit shelves on Saturday, October 17 under the name Addyi.
Even though men have access to 26 drugs intended to treat sexual dysfunction (although only nine are approved by the FDA), until now, women haven't had access to any. However, flibanserin is the first drug developed solely to increase sex drive for either men or women, and could propel further research in similar medicines.
Right now, Addyi isn't super easy to get a hold of. The drug can only be prescribed by doctors who have been trained by the company who developed it, Sprout Pharmaceuticals. Women who have a prescription will have their experiences monitored by their doctor.
One of the reasons for all the red tape - and the delayed FDA approval, which finally came this August after two rejections of the drug in 2010 and 2013 - is the extreme side effects that accompany it. Alongside dizziness, fatigue and nausea, the drugs' makers warn against random fainting, and users must stay away from alcohol.
While these side effects can cause some worry, it's great that women who suffer from HSDD now have options. Sexual satisfaction is super important to feeling confident in yourself and your relationships!
