Summer is one of our favorite seasons to dress for, because it's all about color, crop tops, high-waisted shorts and comfy kicks, like Vans or Converse. Whether you're going to an amusement park, the beach or a resort on vacation, you always want to stay cool, while still looking fashionable and embracing the hottest summer trends.

Meet our newest Fashion Muses, Tiffany Taylor and Hayley Ogas. They've been BFFs for basically as long as they can remember. These girls first started posting videos on a joint YouTube channel to stay in touch when they lived 1,000 miles apart - in North Carolina and Nebraska. Now, they both live in Los Angeles and love to create fashion and lifestyle videos for the everyday girl, featuring looks and brands that are trendy, fun and affordable.

Want to look like Tiffany and Hayley? Here's where you can score each look:

For the amusement park look, Hayley is wearing Forever21 white shortalls with a Topshop crop top. Tiffany is wearing PacSun shorts, an Urban Outfitters top, a Victoria's Secret bando and high top Converse.

The perfect beach look is about finding a coverup that can go from the sand to a casual dinner after the sun goes down. Hayley's shorts and lace top are from Forever 21, while Tiffany's wearing a Brandy Melville dress. Both girls' swimsuits are from Victoria's Secret.

For their resort look, both Hayley and Tiffany's outfits are part of the Lilly Pulitizer x Target Collection. Tiffany is also wearing a white vest from PacSun.

Talk about truly tragic...Jeremy Cook, an 18-year-old Canadian teen, was killed after he used an app to track down his lost smartphone. After leaving his phone in a cab, he used a tracking app to find out where his missing device was.

When he arrived at the address on Highbury Avenue in Ontario with a relative, three men were waiting outside in a car. According to police, Jeremy approached the car and they began to drive away, prompting him to grab the driver's side door. Gunshots were fired and the teen died from multiple wounds.

The car was found abandoned and Jeremy's phone was also recovered, police say, but the three suspects are still at large. Some people would cell phone tracking apps a lifesaver, but in Jeremy's case, his life has now been senselessly lost. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends.

Zayn Malik Leaked Song Sparks Naughty Boy and Mic Righteous Feud

Naughty Boy Mic Righteous Zayn MalikYou didn't think that song featuring Zayn Malik that was leaked the other day would go down without some drama, now did you? And you certainly could have guessed that good old Naughty Boy would somehow find his way into the mix. Because of course.

So, to back up, Zayn's collab with Mic Righteous, a cover of "No Type," was uploaded by the rapper. It was later removed and some Twitter ranting went down between Mic Righteous and Naughty Boy, as Naughty claimed the track wasn't finished and was stolen from his hard drive.

We couldn't make this stuff up if we tried, tbh.

Mic Righteous took to Facebook to explain the whole thing, writing: "The fact naughtyboy straight up acted like he never knew me, and said i stole the song from a hard drive in his studio (when me, him and Zayn sat there and recorded it together) made it clear to me these fame hungry fatties only wanna be around you if you hot."

In another post, Righteous explained:

"I'm sat here with my thoughts, no PR company around me, no lawyers, no marketing team, just my son asleep next to me.

Last night I decided to put out a record I made with fellow artist and friends Naughty Boy and Zayn Malik with no serious intention of release to start creating some movement for my up and coming album. Following that leak my former friend and publisher threw me under a bus by publicly denying having any involvement with me being on the record."

Mic Righteous further talked about how he "spent months on end contacting him in regards to my album (which I have personally funded at great expense) with no response."

You can read his full statement below, but he notes, "At this moment in time I am unaware of the implications my truth telling will have on my career but I know this is something I have to do for my fan base who I have neglected, my family and team who have seen me struggle but also for myself."

Im sat here with my thoughts, no PR company around me, no lawyers, no marketing team, just my son asleep next to me....

Harry Styles Is Apartment Shopping in New York City?

Harry Styles New York City apartment Taylor SwiftThere have been some quiet rumblings that Harry Styles is looking for a place in New York City, but we whispered "hush" and the buzz seemed to simmer down. Now it's back again, and slightly more rumbly - and more rumor-soaked too, as these things go.

Racked reports that Harry was looking for an apartment in TriBeCa, the very neighborhood of his ex-girlfriend, Taylor Swift. Racked has even mapped out the new apartment's location relative to Taylor's pad. It's a three minute walk away? Cray.

Whether this latest buzz is true or not remains to be seen, but according to the NY Post, the $3.9 million condo has the following features: "The full-floor loft comes with an open living room with 11-foot vaulted ceilings, a gas fireplace and a chef's kitchen with hardwood flooring throughout. Building amenities include a gym, terrace, round-the-clock doorman/concierge and a parking garage."

Welcome to New York, Harry.

Kelly Osbourne Catches Heat After Dressing Up Like Rachel Dolezal

2015 CFDA Fashion Awards - Inside ArrivalsSocial media peeps have been going in on former NAACP leader Rachel Dolezal since her parents outed her as a white woman pretending to be black (take one look at #askrachel and you'll see what we mean).

But, when Kelly Osbourne got in on the joke Thursday, not everyone thought it was funny. "#CallMeRachel #MyCasualLook," she captioned a selfie, which showed her wearing a Rachel-style curly wig.

Mainly, some of her followers were heated because they felt like Kelly was insensitive and/or making fun of Rachel's hair after she blasted Giuliana Rancic for dissing Zendaya's dreadlocks on Fashion Police.

"I wonder how your girl @zendaya feels about this? Don't you remember jumping off the sinking ship of Fashion Police due to a comment about black women's hair?," one user commented on Instagram. "What a hypocritical way of expressing your humor maybe you don't remember someone else trying to be funny on Fashion Police ...very upsetting coming from you Kelly..," someone else wrote.
There were others who did find humor in Kelly's post though, with one follower writing, "LMAO chill. Spot on tho," and another writing, "I dont know why people would think this ISNT funny, because it is and its not deeper than that."

For what it's worth, Rachel's latest hairstyle does look like the one in Kelly's pic, but it is not her real hair (she admitted to this) and - again - Rachel is not actually black. This is just the latest time Kelly commented on the Rachel Dolezal scandal, though. In a separate post, she put up a split shot of the civil rights activist and wrote, "This has utterly shocked me!!! It's a #WholeNewLevelOfWrong."

Meanwhile, after Rachel said she identifies as "transracial," people all over Twitter started putting up posts like this:

Emilia Clarke's Injured Foot Didn't Keep Her From Looking Flawless

Emilia Clarke Visits Kiss FMCelebrities might not be human. OK, fine - we all know that they're clearly oxygen-breathing creatures just like the rest of us. But at times, that can be difficult to accept, especially when stars like Game of Thrones' Emilia Clarke can hobble around on crutches with an injured foot and still look ridiculously stunning.

On Thursday, the actress made some appearances in London to promote her film Terminator: Genisys, and despite her obvious injury, she looked footloose and fancy free (sorry, we couldn't resist). But seriously, we totally understand Emilia's commitment to her craft. As they say, beauty is pain, so we give major kudos to the actress for slaying in gorgeous dresses and heels, crutches included.
Um, we see no flaws here.

Given the demands of being a Hollywood star, Emilia's not the only celebrity who successfully maintained her fierceness in the face of an injury or illness. Recently, Hailey Baldwin managed to still keep it cute after breaking her foot.

Broke my lil foot smh 😞

Last year, Angelina Jolie missed the premiere of her film Unbroken when she caught the chicken pox, but still looked unbelievably gorgeous in the apology video she uploaded to YouTube.

So we totally take back what we said about celebs not being human - they're superhuman.

Blake Lively Is a Glittery Goddess in This High School Dance Pic

Celebrity Sightings in New York - April 21, 2015Have you ever had somebody tag you in a Throwback pic on Facebook and really wish they would've kept that snap to themselves? This is probably that moment for Blake Lively.

In a pic that Imgur user Schnecken uploaded Thursday, the Age of Adaline star can be seen outside of a high school dance rocking a cleavage-baring, glittery dress completely covered with pink and silver sparkles. She's also sporting a teensy crown, a piecey bang and bleach blonde highlights to boot.
View post on imgur.com

Meanwhile, her date is standing behind her and looks like he's afraid to touch her, making for one seriously awkward pose. "hover handsing a younger Blake Lively," Schnecken captioned the pic.

It's not clear if Blake was crowned prom princess that night or felt the crown would be a perfect accessory, but one thing is for sure: this was her moment to shine and she was going to take it.

Today, Blake has ditched that glitzy gown for a closet fashionistas would kill for, and her husband is Ryan Reynolds. Sheer proof that no matter how awkward a high school moment, all of your dreams can still come true.

Jenna Dewan's New Asymmetrical Haircut Is Perfect for Summer

Excuse us, while we book a hair appointment.

We were already loving the lob Jenna Dewan has been rocking this year, but her new asymmetrical hairstyle just took her look to a whole other level. "An A-line haircut to go with a red lip & those @jennaldewan #Eyes Haircolor @denisdesouza #JennaDewanTatum, her hairstylist Jen Atkin captioned a shot of Jenna rocking the look.
The cut and that splash of highlights on the ends...are giving us life. Before Jenna went short, she was rocking a long hairstyle for a while that looked great on her (what doesn't?), but she's proving it was worth taking a risk and chopping off her locks.

Aside from Jenna, Lucy Hale, Sarah Hyland, Vanessa Hudgens and many more stars are rocking edgy bobs, throwing in splashes of color for the summer and making us swoon. It certainly calls for a hair flip.

Kylie Jenner Rocks Crazy Cleavage and Shows Us How She Pulled It Off

Sugar Factory Opening Grand Opening In South BeachOk, there is no denying that Kylie Jenner's boobs looked a little different during her Sugar Factory appearance on Friday night. The cleavage-baring ensemble kind of made it hard not to see that they were looking a lot bigger than the last time we saw them. Not that we're creepin' on Kylie or anything, but she posts plenty of bikini photos, so we're pretty familiar with her standard silhouette.

Then, this happened...
Sugar Factory Opening Grand Opening In South BeachNow, we know Kylie utilizes cleavage contouring because she had a major contour fail during an appearance in March. But, this can't be all contouring, can it?

Nope, it isn't...but it's not what you think. And Kylie is not new to this life, so she knows what you're thinking, too. "Whoever thinks I have breast implants," she said, knowing the internet way too well. "There's a whole lotta tape in here." And then she pulled back her shirt, revealing her secret and making all of the 'she had plastic surgery' peeps eat their words yet again.
Brb, going to buy ten rolls of tape.

LOL! Arnold Schwarzenegger Scares Fans at the Wax Museum

Arnold Schwarzenegger is offering fans a chance to go with him to the Terminator Genisys premiere and he had an interesting way of making the announcement.

Sure, he could have just posted it on his Facebook page and promoted the heck out of it on Twitter, but why do that when you can make a viral video and get everyone talking about it?

The only tricky part is that making a viral video means you have to come up with something epic, because speaking for the collective internet, we have very high viral video standards. Arnold pulled it off, though.

First, he went out on the streets of Hollywood dressed as The Terminator and took some pics with tourists, scared some people and even met his doppelganger, who he had an "I'll be back"-off with.

The best part was when he went inside Madame Tussauds museum and scared the s**t out of people who thought they were posing with the wax figure. Thanks, Arnold...Now we are forever afraid to go into any wax museum! And those people? They probably WON'T be back!

What Ambulance? This Girl Arrived to Prom in a Coffin

$

After a teen arrived to prom in an ambulance last week, we thought 'who could top this?' Then, the answer showed up.

This teen - who also lives in the Bahamas - took things a step further and hit her high school dance in a coffin. Seriously, she was laying in a closed white coffin and once she arrived, it was opened up, a veil was pulled off her face and she sat up in a strapless white dress smiling.

"This has gone too FAR! #PressPlay : A girl arrives to #Prom in a coffin," The Shade Room, who posted the video, captioned it. Agreed. We love an innovative prom entrance, but girl...

She wasn't the only one that went all out for prom though. The video of the mystery teen in a coffin surfaced on the heels of pics that hit the internet earlier this week showing a different girl in the Bahamas arriving to her prom in an ambulance. Giving her arrival a 'Sleeping Beauty' theme, Ashvonn Russell was wheeled out on a stretcher in a satin and lace dress with her hair and make-up snatched. Her eyes were closed and she laid still until her date (Prince Charming), walked over to give her a kiss on the cheek. Once he did, Ashvonn woke up, hopped off and strutted her way into prom (stopping to give a fierce pose for cameras).

Ashvonn later told Buzzfeed she decided to take her entrance up a notch after a local Key Club for three different high schools on the Abaco Islands put on a "Best Entrance" contest for the dance. We just want to know what the prize was for winning it, and furthermore, who won? Because if it wasn't Ashvonn or the teen in the coffin, we really don't have a clue.

Is Kylie Jenner Getting a Tyga Tattoo?

Tyga was recently spotted sporting some fresh ink on the inside of his arm that appeared to say "Kylie," so is she going to return the favor and get his name inked on her body?

Rumor has it, she's giving it some serious thought. According to Hollywood Life, Kylie is thinking about getting her NOT boyfriend's name on her body. "Kylie loves the idea and she's down to do this. But, she did talk to her big sister Khloe about the idea since Khloe has Lamar's name tattooed on her," a source told the site. Actually, just his initials, but same idea.

Apparently, Tyga has some ideas for Kylie's ink. The source also told the site that Tyga wants Ky to get his name inked around her ring finger. Whoa, that sounds pretty serious.

The good news is that now Ky can go to another sister for a second opinion, because Kendall Jenner also has a tattoo now. It's the smallest tattoo that ever existed in the world, but it still (kinda) counts.

Taylor also sent the Rasmussens a congratulations card, which they also shared online. "As if my day couldn't get any better. Just got this from Thank You/Congrats Card from @taylorswift13 #Thankful."

In the card, Tay Tay, who is currently headline her 1989 World Tour, wrote, "I'm so excited for your impending arrival and so honored to be his/her first concert!! Sending you a huge hug from the road."

This isn't the only cool thing Taylor's recently done for her fans, either. She donated $15,000 to one family after they were in a horrific accident, and even crashed another fan-couple's wedding.

Periscope Is the New Snapchat

close up of recording video...This spring, we saw the launch of Periscope, a live-streaming service that brings real-time experiences to viewers all over the world. What makes it different than SnapChat (or any other social video service) is that it focuses on bringing live, worldly, experiences to viewers - as opposed to updates on how someone's dog sleeps in the car. We're looking at you, Kylie Jenner.
Periscope is picking up in the digital tech world, having been acquired by Twitter in March for $100 million and picking up 1 million users in the first 10 days of its launch. Not only that, but this app has a fierce female following:

Sara Haider

One of Periscope's head developers, Sara previously worked for Vine and Twitter. Why is this so awesome? In a recent Elle interview, she stated that she began coding at 8 years old, building Backstreet Boy fan sites. Much to her delight, the Backstreet Boys used Periscope at one of their concerts, and she tweeted, "12-year-old Sara is freakin' out." You go, girl.

Hillary Clinton

Not only is her Twitter bio hilarious, claiming to be a "hair icon" and "pantsuit aficionado," Hillary used Periscope to stream her first presidential campaign rally. Meerkat is another streaming app that launched around the same time, but Persicope seems to be getting more buzz with their celeb users, including Sophia Bush, Kevin Jonas, Mary J. Blige, Tyra Banks, and even Jimmy Fallon.

When these streaming services were released this spring, Katy Perry did an interview with Mashable where she asked about live streaming and how it affected her concert experience. Riding with the digital wave, Katy said, "The phone is the new applause." Next time you're rocking out to "Teenage Dream," don't be shy and wave your phone in the air, streaming your killer concert experience to your followers.
Let's challenge ourselves: Do we want to fill our days with the wonders of the world and once in a lifetime music experiences, or tween queens' pet's sleeping habits? Check out Periscope today to learn more.

Gigi Hadid Explains Why She and Kendall Jenner Aren't Competitive With Each Other

Balmain : Aftershow Dinner - Paris Fashion Week Womenswear Fall/Winter 2015/2016Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner are two of the hottest models out there right now and a lot of people wonder how they manage to be such good friends when they are both two top people in such a highly-competitive industry.

Do they get competitive with each other for big jobs? Does one get mad if the other gets a job that they were gunning for? Does one keep their connections secret so the other doesn't use them to get jobs? Nope, nope and more nope.

In a new interview with Harper's Bazaar, Gigi revealed that she's not competitive with Kendall or any of her other model friends for that matter.

"I don't really feel competition like that," she told them. "Especially in a job like this -we look different, like Hailey [Baldwin] is brunette now. So literally, if they want Kendall [Jenner], they're not going to want someone who looks like me. It's completely different. I think friendships are a lot more valuable than one job. If you're going to let it ruin that, then that's stupid."

So true! There's enough success to go around, as Kendall and Hailey and Gigi are all seeing...and we love that they have each other because it is tough out there and strong women need to stick together.

Tyga's X-Rated "Pleazer" Lyrics Are Not About Kylie Jenner

$

The lyrics in Tyga's songs are generally not kid-friendly. Actually, they're not kid-friendly at all.

His newest song, "Pleazer," is even more explicit than a lot of his other tracks and what really got people talking is the fact that it's about some pretty hardcore sex stuff and he says he's "bout to catch a felony for it," which a lot of people assumed meant he was talking about statutory rape and the fact that his rumored girlfriend Kylie Jenner is 17.

Turns out, the song was recorded before they really started spending time together and Boosie Badazz, who is also featured on the track, posted a pic of them in the studio laying it down in June of last year.

According to TMZ, Boosie says the song is about rough sex, but the "felony" line is just because the sex is so crazy, it should be a crime...or something like that.

Either way, it's not about Kylie and Tyga himself took to Twitter to make everyone feel bad for even thinking that it might be: He followed up with, "Just enjoy pleazer it's summertime party music!" Just don't enjoy it with kids around, unless you plan on having "the talk" with them today.

Lindsey Stirling: 'You Are Not Alone'

You may recognize those stunning red locks from season five of America's Got Talent. Yup, that's Lindsey Stirling. The world renowned violinist recently swung by the AOL offices to promote her latest album Shatter Me as part of the AOL BUILD series. While there, she answered my question about becoming an open, positive voice for young people everywhere.

Last summer, I had the pleasure of interviewing the hip-hop violinist with four other Girls Who Code alumni. Lindsey told us it was the most fun interview she has ever done! She opened up about an eating disorder she experienced in her teens that inspired her song "Shatter Me." She told us how vital it is to retrain your brain to think positively. She 100 percent believes that if you don't like the person you are today, you CAN change.

Lindsey's courage to start a discussion on mental health in teens is both extraordinary and uplifting. According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, 91 percent of women surveyed on a college campus had attempted to control their weight through dieting. These appalling statistics demand that we make stronger efforts to erase the stigma surrounding mental illnesses. You are never alone in your struggle, and it's unfortunate that many people feel isolated during hard times. Influential voices like Lindsey's are helping to change this reality, one open interview at a time.

Depression Can Affect Anyone, Even Queen B

US-MUSIC-GRAMMY AWARDS-SHOWEven the Queen has her off days. Beyoncé Knowles opened up about suffering from depression when her former band, Destiny's Child, disbanded: "I didn't eat. I stayed in my room. I was in a really bad place in life, going through that lonely period: 'Who am I? Who are my friends?' My life changed."

Though she and rapper Jay-Z have been listed as power couple of the year on many occasions, Beyoncé found it difficult to break away from an earlier relationship of six years at age 19 - yes, they were together since they were 13! She was worried that with her newly-acquired fame, she wouldn't find someone to love her for who she was; making new friends scared Beyoncé.

From Queen B and J.K. Rowling to John Green and Lady Gaga, several courageous celebrities have openly discussed their struggles with mental illness. Yet, we as a culture, still allow mental illness to be a topic that's swept under the rug. Before I begin, I just want to say that it's terrifying to write about something this personal, but it needs to be said so it can help someone reading this. This is my story of depression.

Smiling from ear to ear, I tore open the envelope that contained my acceptance letter from NYU's computer science program, the school I've dreamed of being granted admission to since I was a little girl. As the daughter of two immigrant parents who "left everything behind" so my siblings and I could have a better education, I felt like I had paid back my debt to my parents. Upon further examination, I noticed that there had been a problem with my financial aid. Despite incessant calls to the admissions office, my case was just one of many that were too late to fix. To say I was devastated is an understatement. My parents were so happy for me; how would I explain to them that they "left everything behind" for nothing?

Though my brothers offered to help cover the costs of the exorbitant tuition, I wouldn't allow it. I watch my siblings come home exhausted from work, and it wasn't fair for them to have to pay for someone else's mistake. I despairingly began to fill out the acceptance letter to CUNY, my only option. Whenever I was asked about college, I felt the need to explain, "Well, you see, I got into NYU, but my financial aid didn't go through, so I'm going to CUNY for the time being. But please remember, I got accepted!" I was ashamed to have accepted admission to a school I myself didn't have reverence for. I must mention that I was wrong for thinking this; CUNY provides an affordable, rigorous education for thousands of students from all around the world.

My transition into my first semester in college was rough to say the least. In addition to an overwhelming workload and adjusting to an exhaustive commute on buses that nauseated me for as long as I could remember, I also found it extremely difficult to make new friends. I would walk into my Jewish Mysticism class in tears every morning, feeling isolated from my classmates who already knew each other. I was the youngest and the only non-Jewish person there. Was this how it felt for my parents to travel to a foreign country where they didn't know anybody? I stepped into the hallway to compose myself, but couldn't. I felt like someone had sucked the life out of me and I couldn't understand why I all of a sudden felt numb. I had been told college would be "the best four years of my life," but no one ever warned me to expect this.
I told myself to suck it up and focus. I cut out all enjoyable activities from my daily routine, from putting on makeup to dancing around the house while pretending to be Beyoncé. I went from being the girl who jumped out of bed in the morning and skipped around her house to "Run the World" before even brushing her teeth, to being the girl who couldn't care less. Every morning, I threw on an oversized black hoodie, broken thick-framed glasses and loose, torn jeans. I neglected my appearance entirely because I figured time was spent studying for calculus. I also deactivated all my social media accounts in the hopes of buying myself more study time. (I'm back on social media now, and let me just say, I have missed the 'gram. #doitforthegram)

My family noticed this vicious cycle and became worried. At the doctor's office, my concerned parents desperately pleaded, "She used to be so happy. She would dance around the house and now she completely stopped. She's suddenly lost a lot of weight. Please help us." My doctor preferred not to put me on medication and said, "You can solve this problem on your own, right? You just need your confidence back." I nodded my head in agreement, but I knew this wasn't just something I could snap out of. Expecting someone with depression to "be more positive" is like telling someone with a broken leg to "stop worrying." Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain (our control center) that requires medical treatment - it's not something you should expect to recover from on your own.

I was ashamed to ask for help. I was evidently clinically depressed, but who wants to admit they have a mental illness? Everyone around me was already treating me differently; I couldn't stand the thought of exacerbating things by telling yet another person, not even my best friend. I didn't want her to see me like this - she's the most lively person I know and for years, we've both taken pride in practically being the same, energetic person. I was too embarrassed to let her see me in this unusual, depressed state. I avoided her company for several months.

On our way to different clinics, my brothers tightly held my hand. The first one was crowded and uninviting; news reports about a murder roared from the TV. I ran out and curled up into a corner of the hallway, crying to my brothers, repeatedly, that I wanted to go home.

Eventually, we found a psychiatrist with whom I felt more comfortable, but during our first session, I didn't speak a word - my brother spoke for me. Long story short, he put me on medication and I reluctantly accepted the help that I had been refusing for months.

You might be wondering: What does it feel like to have depression?

Well, from MY personal experience (and please remember that numerous things can cause depression and that it's different for everyone), I felt worthless and didn't see any practical value in living; every activity felt pointless and I lost all enthusiasm after being the spastic, energetic one out of all my friends. I slept unhealthy amounts because I just could not get out of bed each morning. I found myself crying uncontrollably throughout the day; anyone who knows me knows that I generally can't stand crying and that I'll do anything to avoid showing my emotions.

The hardest part for me was having to drop out of school that semester. I didn't want anyone the right to call me a college dropout, and I was disappointed in myself for living up to my own and my family's academic standards. I hid the news for months. I failed to recognize that I wasn't a "lazy drop out" who neglected her schoolwork, but a sick one who had neglected her health. Doctors advised that I take some time off from school.

One night, I was watching an episode of the Most Strict Parents, which featured a boy who wasted his parents' money never attending private school and instead, smoked and drank with his friends. I began to cry, thinking, He's also a college dropout. We're the same. How could I do this to my parents? I walked toward my brother, with my hands shaking and began apologizing profusely for being just like the kid from the show. My breathing stopped and I had my first panic attack - the medication had backfired and overwhelmed my system. My brother calmed me down, remindin me that I was nothing like the kid on the show: "He's an inconsiderate, derelict, rebel child and you're a physically ill student. There's a huge difference."

The term "college dropout" carries the connotation that the student didn't try hard enough or was somehow incapable. We typically don't consider that dropping out might have been necessary in order for the student to be mentally and physically healthy. Dropping out of school isn't always indicative of failure; in some cases, it's a transitory, but necessary hurdle that can be overcome with time.

Fast-forward eight months. I just completed my first semester of my freshman year, met wonderful people in clubs at Queens College, landed my dream job of being a TV reporter and met a fellow computer science lover who I'm lucky to call my bae. I feel like I'm on top of the world and I've never been this happy to be alive and healthy. I attribute my recovery to my psychiatrist's help, the support of loved ones, and time. Getting better doesn't happen overnight. While I wish I could elaborate more on small milestones throughout my recovery, I honestly can't pinpoint any "aha" moments where I felt myself getting better - it was very gradual and it took months for me to notice the change.
To anyone who is struggling with depression or something similar, please ask for help because things DO get better once you accept the support of people who love you and medical professionals. Our society perpetuates the stigma surrounding mental illness by demoting public figures who are struggling with a disorder or anything similar; we are too eager to define people by their illness and that needs to stop. Mental illness is not a personal shortcoming; it's a health condition that requires medical attention.

Many of us don't know what to say to someone with depression. I myself didn't, until I experienced it firsthand. During an interview for a coding summer program, I briefly opened up about the depression and emphasized how now I feel ready to take on any challenge that comes my way, especially coding projects. The interviewer warned me, "Know that code doesn't work sometimes and when your code breaks, I don't want you to be sad because I know you had depression." Though appalled by her ignorance of depression, I laughed it off and aid, "Don't worry, depression and coding have nothing to do with each other." I know she meant well, but she completely misunderstood what depression is - it's not just a temporary sadness, it's a damaging and consuming cycle that's out of the individual's control.

Today, I'm grateful to be getting these medications out of my system for good. I'm back to my old self again and I couldn't be happier to dance around my kitchen to Beyoncé every morning. I wouldn't have been able to get through any of this without the love and support of my family and my best friends, who continuously reached out to me from other states and were understanding when it took me several months to finally respond.
