These High Tech High School Yearbooks Are Crazy Cool

0
0
Students at Xavier College Preparatory got a special surprise with their yearbooks this year. The school's yearbook staff utilized a software program called Aurasma to embed video in the pages. The pages themselves don't play the videos, obviously, because that would get crazy expensive, but your phone will play them when you hover it over specific images.

"We thought it would be really cool...and a really cool way to show that there's much more to Xavier than just pictures," the school yearbook's Chief Layout Editor explains.

All students have to do is download the free Aurasma app, look for the pages with the special icon indicating a multimedia element, hold their phone over the page and voila! they're watching video from that event.

It's kind of a new spin on the digital yearbook that gives you the best of both worlds. You don't have to sacrifice having the actual hard copy of the book where you can cross out teacher's faces and your friends can write "have a great summer, stay cool" in, but you still get the digital/multimedia component.

Xavier isn't the first school to make a high tech yearbook, but we're hoping this becomes the new norm because...well, it makes the standard yearbook seem kinda boring.

Silicon Valley Fashion Week? Show Us Your Drones

silicon valley fashion runwaySilicon Valley is the home of some of the world's largest tech companies. The best and the brightest live, work and play in this part of the country in the same way that Hollywood attracts aspiring actors. The Valley has also inspired one of our favorite shows on HBO. We think of a lot of things (computer nerd power represent!) when we think of SV, but is one of those things fashion? Not yet, but this week, everything will change.

The folks over at Betabrand in San Francisco decided to make the "World's Highest Technology Fashion Show," teaming up with global and local engineers and designers to create a three-day interactive fashion show (and yes, the question mark is intentional; see what they did there?) at a music venue, The Chapel, in San Francisco. Each day has a different theme: Tuesday (May 12) was Electric Motion (and had a little controversy), Wednesday was Wearable Tech and today, Thursday, is Crowdfunded Fashion.

What does this all mean for the style world? We're waiting to see if these frocks will go from catwalk to closet, but it looks like models may be on the dole soon as drones walked flew down the runway.
silicon valley fashion week drone on the runwayWe could talk about drones replacing Cara Delevingne all day, but since this is a #BUILTBYGIRLS website, let's salute some seriously cool female designers. They're the ones to watch (although Cara may want to watch her back for drone attacks).

Mikaela Holmes

Mikaela Holmes fiberoptic fashionTaking her inspiration from her experiences at Burning Man, Holmes designs her pieces by "fusing couture design with wearable tech, (especially lighting) and mimicking natural forms with synthetic materials." Her mission statement is all about adorning ourselves: "What we wear can transform us and allow us to become the creatures of our imaginations." Preach!

Tenaya Hurstrogue-making wearables

Hurst is the power behind Rogue Making, a company/store devoted to wearable tech jewelry and sewing kits. When she's not teaching Maker Space to kids and adults alike, she works full time as the head of the education department at Linino. Whew!

Miss T
miss t side show
Considering the fact that SVFW has been promoting the week as a really, really fun circus sideshow (on the website: "the wackiest show in town"), it was a great call to have Miss T as a participant. Born in the Netherlands, Miss T is an experimental filmmaker and "side show" artist.

Jennifer Mann

Based out of San Francisco, Jennifer Mann has her hand in multiple tech projects, but she's primarily known for making LED space helmets. Yes. You heard us. LED space helmets. We want one, too.

New YouTube Video Will Give You Some Serious Disney Deja Vu

Have you ever been watching a Disney movie and thought 'hey, I've seen that scene before' but know that you couldn't possible have seen it because the movie is brand new?

Don't worry, you're not going crazy! This Walt Disney Recycled Animation Series YouTube video shows the scenes back-to-back, so you can the scene in one movie and then it cuts (pretty seamlessly) to the same scene in another movie.

In Disney's defense, a lot of the scenes are dancing, happy scenes and since most Disney movies are feel-good flicks, there's inherently going to be a lot of crossover.

Given how tough hand-drawn animation is (especially from the earlier movies - brand new drawings for every single scene), we can understand why they'd use the same template if they've already spent all of that time creating the original.

According to Mental Floss, "In the early days, Disney animators frequently recycled footage from older animated films. They would simply draw over existing animation cells to make new scenes with characters with similar designs, characteristics, and movements."

And you know what? We're not mad at it because we love all things Disney and it was all their work to begin with. When the trade-off of sitting through one scene you might have seen before is getting to enjoy a brand new awesome movie, that's fine by us.

Still, when you watch it all strung together, it's kind of like...

Watch Ed Sheeran Awesomely Rap About Food With Jamie Oliver

Ed Sheeran and Jamie OliverWhat's a better way to gain awareness than by having Ed Sheeran rap about it? That's exactly what celebrity chef Jamie Oliver did for his latest Food Revolution Day campaign.

The chef posted a video on his Facebook page showing him working on a song in support of his plan for a food revolution day which aims to put food education on the curriculum.

"Ed just came in to do a little bit of filming for me, to support Food Revolution Day. I start telling him a few things, writing a few things down, and then he only went and wrote an anthem," he says in it.

The video also has cameos from Professor Green, Hugh Jackman, Alesha Dixon and Sir Paul McCartney. In addition to the clip, Jamie has launched an online petition for supporters to back his campaign.

"We're currently facing a global obesity epidemic, with 42 million children under the age of five either overweight or obese across the world...The bottom line is the next generation will live shorter lives than their parents if nothing is done to rectify these alarming stats."

He went on, "It's essential that we arm future generations with the life skills they urgently need in order to lead healthier, happier, more productive lives. I passionately believe this is every child's human right and I hope you agree."

Ed recently opened up about his own weight loss, and how eating healthier helped him obtain that. He actually started juicing to slim down!

Celebrities Visit SiriusXM Studios - February 4, 2015Baby James has her dad wrapped around her finger...literally.

After making his debut on Instagram Monday, Ryan Reynolds shared the first shot of his daughter Thursday, showing off an adorable shot of the baby girl's tiny arm and hand holding on to his thumb.

"Thumb wrestling isn't always fair. Curiously, my hand is the small one," the Deadpool star captioned the snap. Ryan not only shared the first glimpse of his and Blake Lively's baby girl, but he also was the first to reveal her name in March.

"It's out there. It's James and I told everyone who would listen that," he said in an interview with Today. As for why it took a few months for the couple to disclose what they named her, Ryan added, "Before it was out there, I didn't want to be the first guy screaming it out to the media."
"Because as we know, little girls turn into teenage girls and little teenage girls sometimes scan through the archives and go, 'Why did you do that?,'" he continued. Blake later explained why they named her James, telling Refinery 29, "It's a family name and I liked having a boy's name," the Age of Adaline star said on 'Good Morning America' last month.

Aside from Ryan's photo post, the duo has yet to share a shot of their daughter with the media. Crossing our fingers this is just the beginning of the pics we'll see of their little one!

One Direction Fans' 'No Control' Campaign Takes Off In a Huge Way

one direction no control single
The power of the One Direction fandom never fails to amaze us. The latest brain child is the 'No Control' project, which started as a seed of an idea to campaign for the band to release "No Control" as a single.

With the help of the hashtag #WeWantNoControlAsASingle on Twitter, word quickly spread to get the Four album track released. Additionally, fans planned #nocontrolday to take place on May 17.

So, how is the campaign doing? Nick Grimshaw and Radio 1, for one, took notice, playing the song on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show. Fans also got to work creating artwork for the single, which has been pretty amazing.

It also got Louis Tomlinson's attention, who tweeted: "This is soooo incredible guys ! Another example of how good you are to us !!"

A superfan named Anna kicked things off, writing on Tumblr: "Since the team who works with the boys is not helping and everything surrounding this band is making me crazy and tired, it'd be nice if for once we made the press talk about something as good as fans doing something for them on a world scale."

She added: "We all agree that No Control should have been a single from Four, we all love the song and we all wanted to hear it on the radio...It doesn't matter there were other songs worth to be a single in the album, this is something the fandom loves and that has always generated a big enthusiasm."

Anna told Newsbeat, "With all the problems they're going through with one member leaving, we're all quite sad and this two month break in the middle of the tour." She added, "I was just trying to make the fandom focus on the music rather than the dramas, because the whole thing was really bad and we didn't like it."

Camila Cabello Opens Up About Her Relationship With Austin Mahone

Austin Mahone and Camila Cabello KIIS FM's Jingle Ball 2013 Presented By T-Mobile In Partnership With Samsung - ShowCamila Cabello isn't dating Austin Mahone anymore, but that doesn't mean she isn't willing to talk about him. During a recent interview, the Fifth Harmony singer opened up about her ex and that rumored beef with his new girlfriend. Is she taking the Taylor Swift route on this one?

Camila took to Twitter to shut down rumors about drama between her and Austin's new GF already and everyone still can't stop talking about it. While she didn't directly mention that stuff, she did talk to Seventeen about Austin. Even though they've both moved on, there's no hate there.

"I don't regret anything. It was my first kiss, my first love," Camila said about him. "It's important to learn about liking somebody and being swept away, but it wasn't meant to be."

"I'll find somebody else," she added. "It's a cycle. I love love. I'm, like, obsessed with it."

We're sure with her awesome girl power support team of T-Swift and the Fifth Harmony girls, she's having no problem not dwelling on the past. We doubt there will be any anti-Austin songs coming from her anytime soon.

Pick up the June/July issue of Seventeen, on newsstands May 19, for more from Camila and the rest of Fifth Harmony.

Transportation You Can Wear: Rocket Skates

We've all been there. Class starts in one minute and you have a 10-minute walk across campus to get there. You could grab your bike, if you happened to bring it with you, but then you have to lock it up when you get there and you lose pretty much all the time you gained.

That's where Rocket Skates come in. You slap them on over whatever shoes you're already wearing (unless you're wearing heels, that might not work out well) and you're on your way. When you get to class, you can just carry them in with you or put them in your backpack if you don't feel like fielding questions about the cool contraptions you're carrying.

It's kind of like rollerblading, but you don't have to break a sweat and you still have shoes to wear when you get where you're going.

They can go up to 12 mph, which is much faster than we could ever run, and they're crazy cool. They also pair up with a free app that routes all of your Rocket Skating adventures, gives you your battery status and allows you to keep in touch with other Rocket Skaters.

A pair of Rocket Skates ranges in price from $499 for the R6 model to $699 for the R10 model.

Here's Why Ashley Benson Won't Date a "High-Profile" Actor

Miu Miu Women's Tales 9th Edition - When it comes to relationships, Ashley Benson would rather keep hers on the low.

The 25-year-old Pretty Little Liars star, who's been on-again, off-again with Justin Bieber's swagger coach, Ryan Good, said she considers relationships in the entertainment business to be "so hard," and wouldn't would to make it any tougher by dating a high-profile celeb.

"I don't think I would be able to date a high profile actor the way Angelina Jolie has," she told Fashion magazine. "Her and Brad have done a good job at keeping private but I'm sure that takes work. It's too much attention when two powerful people are together. Everything is heightened and exaggerated. The strangest thing that I've read is that I've dated all the male co-stars I've had on Pretty Little Liars. None of it is true. It's disgusting."
The Comedy Central Roast Of Justin Bieber - Backstage And AudienceAshley recently dished on how uncomfortable she's been with fame since Pretty Little Liars took off, telling Wonderland in March, "Weirdly, I'm shy. When people first meet me, they always think that I'm a b*tch. I always get called that. Always. Because I don't talk."

"I get really nervous in public situations, but once you get to know me, I'm so outgoing, I'm so loud and bombastic," she continued. "If I could work and not have anyone know who I am - I know it's not possible - that would be my goal."

Ashley's fame issues aside, she also dished on one of the people she admires most in the entertainment industry: Jennifer Lawrence. "I think she's the coolest person in the business," Ashley said of the Hunger Games star. "She's breaking the mold of what Hollywood stars are supposed to act like. I look up to her so much. Actors should stop acting when the cameras are off."

Fashion Magazine's summer 2015 issue - which Ashley covers - hits newsstands Monday.

Brittany Snow And Skylar Astin With Writer Kay Cannon Visit AOL BuildBrittany Snow has a special message for victims of cyber bullying.

The Pitch Perfect 2 star teamed up with Tumblr's #PostItForward campaign, which strives to end the stigmatization of mental and emotional health issues and promote "positivity and support in online communities," according to Cosmopolitan.

Brittany, who has talked about her own past issues with internet bullying, admitted in a Tumblr video that she's gone through some times in her life where she's felt "different and alone," adding "for many years when I was younger I let negative things people said about me really affect my life."

"What I've learned is that it's really important to find the right support network and to focus on the positive things in your life and quiet that negative voice in your head," she continued. "The advice I give to people who feel different or are struggling is to simply tell yourself in your head 'maybe that's not true."

The more you do that, the easier it becomes, she said, also encouraging internet bullying victims to reach out to others, whether its for help or to share their stories. "The more people you reach out to, you can really find there's a lot of people who have been through something similar."

For the campaign, Brittany, and other celebs like Pete Wentz and Jordin Sparks are asking people to share their stories of internet bullying and how they overcame it with the hashtag #postitfoward on social media.

Ciara Kicks Fan in Face While Giving Him Sexy Lap Dance

Ciara in concert in AtlantaOh my embarrassing! Ciara was performing a sexy lap dance during a concert on Wednesday at the Center Stage Theater in Atlanta when she accidentally kicked a male fan in the face. In a clip posted online, Cee-Cee is seen trying to do a backflip onto a guy's lap. Instead of doing all that, she smacked him in the face with her boot. Ouch!

The embarrassing, yet oh-so-funny, video was posted on Instagram by a fan, who hilariously captioned the video, "The moment when you had too much to drink and you're giving bae a lap dance... #Ciara #JackieTour #Atlanta."

Ciara played the whole thing off like a pro, though. She didn't even start cracking up, and eventually completed her backflip move onto the man's lap.

She also didn't mention the lap dance on social media after the show, but did thank Atlanta for an amazing time. "A T L... There's No Place Like H O M E. The Love Was So Special and Unreal Tonight! #JackieTour SoldOut!"

Check out the video below of Ciara's failed lap dance. File that one under "epic fail," eh?

One Direction James Corden Interview: 1D Were Angry When Zayn Malik Quit

The hotly anticipated One Direction interview with James Corden on The Late Late Show went down last night - and it didn't disappoint.

Fans wondered if there would be any mention of Zayn Malik leaving the band or if they would just carry on with the interview without mention of the band's former member. They did discuss all the feels that went with Zayn's decision to leave though - let's just say it wasn't easy for them, as Liam Payne said they were angry and disappointed.

He explained, "At first we were a little bit angry," adding, "We were surprised, but we all knew the general vibe that Zayn was feeling. You could sort of tell, people on the outside could tell as well."

Liam added, "There's certain parts of this job that Zayn loved and certain parts that he didn't. If you don't like your job then you've got to follow your heart sometimes and go where you need to go. We were angry at first but then it was just a bit more disappointed. We wish him the best of luck with whatever he gets up to...there's no hard feelings."

When asked if they considered calling it quits after Zayn left, Niall Horan said, "Not at all. The four of us love every part of it. The shows have been great on the tour and the fans deserve it. They've been absolutely fantastic to us."

As for that Twitter feud between Zayn and Louis Tomlinson, Louis admitted, "there was a bit of back and forth" saying, "I've never been very good at biting my tongue."

Good news though - the feud is over, as Louis explained, "It's just one of those things. Twitter's great for connecting with the fans, but if you feel like saying something that you probably shouldn't, it's also good for that as well. It's all resolved, it's all good in the hood."

Other highlights: the guys acknowledged the fans' campaign to get "No Control" released as their next single! Plus, they revealed that "One Thing" is no longer on their setlist - does that mean "No Control" will take its place?

During the interview, we also found out that Liam is a great wingman to Louis, they chatted about the weirdest thing that's been thrown on stage, and dished on "Oh no, Niall" becoming a huge joke after he fell down when he caddied for Rory McIlroy. Oh, and Harry Styles did a juice cleanse and sort of talked about that new tattoo.

One Direction Play Dodgeball With James Corden in Hilarious Sketch

The One Direction guys got up to a little fun with The Late Late Show host James Corden, playing a game of dodgeball in this hilarious pre-recorded segment shown during last night's show.

James joined the 1D team, calling themselves "Corden's Angels," as they took on the all-female team, "Ball Busters." But first, they sang their "national anthem" - a pretty bad take on their hit "Steal My Girl."

Things to look out for: all the guys in tiny dodge ball shorts, some interesting teaching techniques from coach James, and Harry Styles' newest thigh tattoo!

How did they do? Wellll...they were no match for the "Ball Busters," but they get an A for effort. In another video clip, the opposing team weighed in on the best and weakest player on Corden's Angels. See how they ranked them.

Hilary Duff's Tinder Dates Featured in 'Sparks' Music Video

Remember how Hilary Duff was going on Tinder dates? It turns out it was all for her new music video "Sparks", which is all sorts of confusing. The video starts out like an episode of E! News, with various reporters talking about how the 27-year-old pop star is on Tinder.

Then the video starts with Hil singing in a pink room, only to cut back to her mid-interview and her friends helping her choose guys on the app. Things get more weird when there's footage of her first Tinder date, which was going bowling with Tom, followed by go karting with another online suitor. First online dates are awkward enough already without cameras rolling!

It's a coin flip #dating #thestruggle #bigkidproblems

We have so many questions. Did Hilary get paid by Tinder to basically make her music video an ad for the dating app? Why is the first guy's face blurred out? Why does her hair keep changing colors? Where did her pants go? We feel like swiping left on "Sparks."

Tattoo Artist Reveals Why Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran Got Pingu Tattoos

The Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran bromance is bound by ink - of a tiny cartoon penguin named Pingu. Ah...guy love. Have you ever wondered how Harry and Ed decided on that cartoon to seal the deal?

Ed's tattoo artist, Kevin Paul, recently dished on how old Pingu came to be the adorable little symbol of their undying friendship. Turns out it's not as thoughtful and bromantic as you'd imagine. Shucks. There was some drinking involved, however.

Kevin explained to The Sun, "When he and Ed were drunk they discovered they both liked Pingu as kids, so one had the word and the other had the picture." That would be Ed with the illustrated Pingu ink and Harry with just the word - practically in his armpit, of all places.

As for the little padlock tattoo that Ed gave to Harry? Kevin said he played a part in it, explaining, "That was with my machine. I showed him how to do it."

Topless Khloe Kardashian Photobombs Kylie Jenner's Selfie

Whoa! Kylie Jenner's selfie just got a whole lot sexier, thanks to this topless photobomb from Khloe Kardashian.

We know, there is an ongoing debate about whether a photobomb must be intentional to count and we are in the group that believes any cameo in the background "counts." If you are of the belief that it must be intentional, we don't want to disappoint you if you came for the photobomb, so here's a little somethin' somethin' just for you.

Anyway, back to Khloe. The pic was posted on makeup artist Joyce Bonelli's page, and she gave our girl a shoutout in the caption, joking, "it's not really about us though @KhloeKardashian."

The ladies were all in New York for the NBC Universal Cable Upfront (along with Kris Jenner) and when Khloe finally did put some clothes on, she looked absolutely stunning. All three of them did, actually!

Madonna Shows Off Pink Ombre Hair

Madonna has switched up her style a lot over the last few decades (yes, she's been popular for that long!). Her hair color, however, has pretty much remained the same - blonde, with a few intermittent brunette blips on the radar.

In this new pic, however, Madge experimented with pink tips and we're kinda loving it. Then again, when you're a style icon, you can't really make a wrong move, can you?

Either way, this one just feels totally right and while we can't tell if they're just Kylie Jenner-style extensions or if she really did do that to her hair, we do hope she sticks with this look for at least a little while.

While she's often been a trailblazer on the fashion front, Madonna actually isn't the first celeb to try out pink tresses.

Miley Cyrus throwing Miley moneyWhat's a better way to get people going than to give them some money? That's exactly what Miley Cyrus did when she ran into the paparazzi outside 1 OAK nightclub on Wednesday, May 13 in New York City.

"How I deal wit da paps #mileymoney," the tweerking singer posted on Instagram with a pic of herself giving away fake money from her balloon basket. We aren't really sure what Miley money can buy you, but we bet it's a good time.

Just another night in the life of Miley? Pretty much!

This Guy Just Gave "Let It Go" a Crazy, Screamo Twist

Let It Go Screamo Britain's Got TalentWe aren't really sure what we just watched. A guy tried out for Britain's Got Talent, and while we were all filled with joy when we heard the music of Frozen's "Let It Go" start up, we were more than surprised when he started to sing.

We wouldn't say singer Aaron Marshall has the voice of an angel or anything, but he did put a unique twist on the Disney movie favorite. He added an unexpected sound by yelling/screaming/growling the entire track.

While one of the judges was totally offended by the performance, the other three let him finish. He totally ended up winning over the crowd and moving on to the competition's next round.
