'Working it' indeed.Serena Williams not only stunned on Vogue's April 2015 cover, she also made history by becoming the first black, female athlete to ever be featured solo on the cover of the magazine.
During an interview with Vogue, the 33-year-old tennis phenom talked about her success, and opened up about her friendship with fellow tennis player Caroline Wozniacki. "Let's just put an end to this myth that women players cannot be friends," Venus said. "We can!"
"It's hard and lonely at the top," Venus added. "That's why it's so fun to have Caroline [Wozniacki] and my sister, too. You're a target when you're number one. Everyone wants to beat you. Everyone talks behind your back, and you get a lot more criticism. God forbid I lose. It's like 'Why?' Well, I am human."
Serena and Caroline are so close that the Vogue cover girl was one of the first people that was there for her after golfer Roy Mcllroy suddenly called off their engagement. "My phone was going crazy," Caroline told the mag, "But I didn't want to talk to anyone." While most people eventually got the hint, Serena kept calling anyway."First she texted, 'If you don't pick up, I am going to fly to Monaco.' And then, 'If you don't answer the door, I am going to knock it down,'" Caroline recalled. "So I thought, OK, I better answer the phone. And I am so glad I did. She wasn't pitying me, like a lot of people were. I mean, it's not like anyone died. I was in shock, but she was really helpful because she had been through it before. She didn't sugarcoat it, and she didn't look down on me. She was really there for me when I needed her the most, and that's why I think our friendship is so strong now."
"I was impressed with how strong she was," Venus added. "And you know, there will be other engagement parties." She paused a beat, before they both burst into laughter. "Many."
