Andreja Pejic (formerly known as Andrej Pejic) is a big time supermodel. She's appeared on the covers of major fashion magazines, including Elle and French Vogue and she's strutted her stuff on the runway in both men's and women's fashion shows.
In a move supported by her agency, friends and family, Andreja has just come out as a transgender woman and will now be only modeling women's clothing going forward.
In a statement to Style.com, the 22-year-old revealed that this is something she's wanted to do for a very long time and that her signature androgynous style was essentially her feminine outlet.
"I figured out who I was very early on-actually, at the age of 13, with the help of the Internet - so I knew that a transition, becoming a woman, was always something I needed to do," she explained. "But it wasn't possible at the time, and I put it off, and androgyny became a way of expressing my femininity without having to explain myself to people too much."
Since the announcement, Andreja has received a tremendous amount of support from her fans and posted the following heartfelt message on her Facebook page:
She also released the following statement to GLAAD: "To all trans youth out there, I would like to say respect yourself and be proud of who you are. All human beings deserve equal treatment no matter their gender identity or sexuality. To be perceived as what you say you are is a basic human right."
Given that she's changed her name from Andrej to Andreja, the model has changed her social media handles accordingly.
