One Direction might be this generation's biggest UK invasion, but this week on
American Idol the top 9 finalists paid homage to the band that started it all,
The Beatles.
Kicking off the night was
Kree Harrison singing "With a Little Help From My Friends." "There's a lot of pressure going first," Kree told us. Well, that pressure sure paid off. "The judges' feedback was awesome," she said. "
Randy and
Mariah tricked me for a minute. I literally had a minor heart attack."
It was hard to believe that
Angie Miller wasn't familiar with the huge popularity of her song choice ("Yesterday"). "I didn't know that," she said. "I had no idea." Her reaction to the judges' positive feedback? "I feel so good. Every time it's still a shock hearing good things from the judges."
Taking "The Long and Winding Road" was
Devin Velez. "
Keith said that he didn't feel too much
heart, but on the contrary, I feel that I gave it my all," Devin said. "I feel like I related to the song really well. I'm glad that
Nicki spoke up for me and that Mariah loved it." Devin was in the bottom two last week: "I kept telling myself you need to kick butt today. And I think I did that."
After hearing
Candice Glover's performance of "Come Together," we never would have guessed that she's not familiar with the Fab Four. "I did not grow up listening to The Beatles at all. I knew that being on the show you're going to come across things that you didn't really know." Candice made sure to keep it classic but also added her own touch. "Somebody said
Aretha [Franklin] meets The Beatles, so I kind of put soul into it," she explained.
Though the judges didn't really feel
Paul Jolley's song choice with "All the Lonely People," Paul stayed, well, jolly. "I respect everything the judges told me," he said. "But then again, I have to keep my own confidence up that I did the best I could do." Paul understands that everyone is also entitled to their own opinion. "It's four people's opinions, and if they didn't like it, they didn't like it." He gets our vote for thickest skin.
When we found out
Burnell Taylor had not previously heard of The Beatles' (arguably) most iconic song, we were wondering why he chose it. "Because I didn't know any of them!" he told us. "So I had to pick something." Okay, makes sense. "I heard that 'Let It Be' was a really popular song." Good thing he nailed every note. "I went wherever the song allowed me to go. I feel like God definitely guided me through the performance," he said.
Lazaro Arbos sang "My Life" and had a rough time with the feedback. "The reason I broke down on stage was because I felt that according to what the judges said, that was my worst song," he said. "I felt like I let a lot of the people down." But we're glad that Lazaro can still see the glass half full. "We all have our good weeks and we all have our bad weeks."
And according to Randy, this was a really good week for
Janelle Arthur. "I think that was the best performance of the night," Randy declared after her take on "I Will." Janelle couldn't believe it, "That was crazy!" she told us. "That made me feel really good cause I mean, it's not country night." We cannot wait for this girl to really be in her element!
